What is important to enjoy homestay
You may have heard some negative feedback about homestay, including that it’s hit or miss. Unfortunately, there are hit or miss. However, if you clarify your expectations for your homestay, you won’t be messed up.
Homestay is an important factor that influences your study abroad life!
Homestay is a big factor that makes your studyabroad life fun or boring. Even if you enjoy school, you may feel that studyabroad is not fun if you don’t want to go back to your homstay.
abroad life. It can be said that a fun studyabroad = a family that makes you want to go back to your homestay. So how can you find a home that makes you want to go homestay?
It is to clarify your expectations for your homestay. And clearly communicate that expectation to your school or homestay agency.
Expectations for homestay
Ten years ago, when I had studyabroad, my expectation for a homestay was "a home that communicates well." I just wanted to improve my English skill, so I was looking for a host to spend some time with.
I thought a host family that has already retired rather than a family that is always busy with work fit for me. Also, I liked the family that communicated with me, so I didn't want to stay in a "family with a lot of time alone"
Therefore, I would expect "a host family having communication well" and "a home that spends less time alone".
If I am currently doing a homestay, I choose a host family who provides healthy meals" and "a home where I can spend time alone". When you get older, you start to pay attention to your health.
Also, I prefer a host family who respects each other. It makes me comfortable.
As mentioned above, expectations for homestay are different now than they were 10 years ago. If I stayed at homestay where I could spend my time alone" 10 years ago, it would be a miss homestay because it was different from your expectations, but if I stayed in the same process now, it would be a hit homestay as expected.
In this way, hit and miss depends on whether or not it fits your expectations.
What are your expectations?
I'm sure there is someone who wants to stay with a nice host family but has no expectations. Let's take a look at the actual inquiries of past students to find out what kind of expectations you have.
・ Close to school
How close is it? I would rather write for an hour without a transfer than to transfer to a bus in 30 minutes
Make it clear whether you like walking or are thinking about going to school by bicycle.
・ A host family with kids
Do you think how old are kids? If a host mother and father are in their 60s, thier kids may be in their 30s. Let's say that a child of elementary school age is good, a small child of kindergarten is good, or a 15 to 18 years old kids etc…
・ A host family with pets
Is a pet a dog? Little bird? Cat? snake? If you like anything, it's okay for a family with pets, but if you like dogs, write so. In addition, it would be better to clarify that large dogs are good, small dogs are good, indoor dogs are good, and so on.
I want to have roommates
If you make a request to have roommates, there is a possibility that they are all japanese. If you want to avoid that, you should request that roommates are non-Japanese.
Host family who provides delicious food
What is your favorite meal? If you like vegetables, it might fit you with a host family who eats vegetables more than meat.
The food in Los Angeles is generally heavy. Let's write your food preference.
Prefer particular race
This request can’t be made. This is because choosing by race is discrimination and the law prohibits racial discrimination.
It's good to be clear, but if you stick to everything too much, there may be no host family who fits you.
Tell school or homestay agencies your requests.
You should tell school or homestay agencies your requests if you have. Otherwise, you may disappointed.
Schools don’t focus on homestays. Most of the time they are asked if they have any allergies and decide your host family.
Some schools will listen to your requests as much as possible, so let's tell them your expectations and requests. If the school doesn't listen to your expectations, it's better to ask a homestay agency.
If the homestay agency doesn't listen to your expectations and requests, you shouldn’t use it. There is little value in using a homestay agency.
You can look for a homestay yourself, but you don't know how the host is and their criminal records. Therefore, we don’t recommend you look for a homestay yourself from Japan.
You can choose a host family in 2 or 3 hosts we recommend
Please feel free to contact us as you can check the availability of a host for free until you decide where to stay.
