Greeting Your Host Family Before Going to America

So let’s start with an email where you want to greet your host family for the first time. The main point here is to include a short self-introduction. The date here is just a sample date, so be sure to change it to suit whatever day you’re sending the message on.

A Sample Message For When You Don’t Need Dinner

For times when you will not be eating dinner with your host family, you must let them know in advance. Most students simply just let them know with a text message. Here is an example:

Even if you are staying with a host family that has no rules regarding curfew, you should inform your host family if you will be coming home late.

What you can say when you meet your host family

Usually, your host family will follow up by asking “How are you?”, so in that case go can respond with:

Phrases For Use During Meals

Your host family will be happy to receive any compliments about the food they have cooked. Here are some phrases you can use to do so!

・This is the best dish I have ever had!
（今まで食べた中で一番美味しいです！DishのところをMash Potatoなど食材に置き換えるのもアリ）

・I am full,thank you so much.
（お腹いっぱいです。ありがとう！）

・I can't eat anymore.
（これ以上食べられません）

・Could I have easy rice, please?
（ご飯少なめにしてもらえますか？）

・Could you please get that for me?
(それとってもらえますか？）

・Could you pass me that salt, please?
(あの塩とってもらえますか？）

Be sure to be proactive and compliment the food!

When you want to ask for something, it is more polite to use “could” instead of “can”, but if you use “please” at the end of your request that also can make your request more polite.

Phrases For When You Don’t Understand What Was Said

While you may think you understood what was said, trouble can occur if you actually did not, so be sure to ask for clarification using the following phrases:

・Could you say that again?
（もう一度言ってもうらえますか？）

・Sorry?
（簡単ですがこれも使えます）

・Could you speak slowly, please？
（ゆっくり話してもらえますか？）
